Church Plant Starting Line

Some of you know that I enjoy running. If you go on a regular run for fun or to exercise, you plan your route, grab your earbuds, and off you go. In an organized race, however, a lot more is required: you register in advance, pick up your bib, show up at the appointed day and time, line up at the starting line, and go when the starting pistol is fired.

In addition to marathons, God’s given me a heart for another kind of race. I’ve registered to run this race when I proclaimed Christ as my Lord and Savior, I’ve picked up my bib when I took my ordination vows, and I’ve been waiting for the appointed day and time to line up at the starting line — along with many others — to start running this marathon when the starting pistol is fired.

This other kind of organized race is to plant a new church: Edge City Church — a name given to me from God for this new body of believers (more on this story to come!).

This coming Monday, April 16, is the 122nd annual Boston Marathon. I will be at the starting line at 10:25 AM when the starting pistol is fired. As God sovereignly moves, it is clear to me that we have the appointed time for when the starting pistol that signals Edge City Church’s official launch will be fired: September 9, 2018.

Now, if I invite you to join me for the Boston Marathon, I know many of you would politely decline because you know how difficult it is to run a marathon, and you might not think you can do it.

Friends, I invite you to join me for the Edge City Church marathon — a race I know you can complete, because we have the confidence, strength, and power from Jesus who sustains us. It will require hard work, sweat, suffering, endurance, determination, and perseverance. But we will train for it together, and in the end, it will be worth it, for it’ll be for the glory of God.

All who aspire to complete a marathon will go through a season of intense, purposeful training and preparation. That is the next step for you and me.

I’ll be writing weekly as we meet and work toward the September 9 launch date — please SIGN UP to receive communications about the church plant. Up next week: training season.

I’m praying that you will run this church plant marathon with me; though, if you want to run the other kind of marathon, let’s do that, too!

“I do all this for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings...Therefore I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight like I am beating the air. No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.” —1 Corinthians 23, 26-27
